of the last candidate for president, mitt romney. but the thing that struck me the most about mitt romney's speech, which was his first major public appearance since losing the presidency, of the part at the end of his speech where he talked about the iraq war. he described the iraq war as a war of liberation. we fought the iraq war to liberate the iraqi people from tyranny. the iraq war was supposedly to get saddam hussein's weapons of mass destruction and the nuclear weapons he was going to set off. we were going into that war to stop him from giving those biological and chemical weapons to the terrorists that they told us he was working with in al qaeda. that's why they told us we had to go to war in iraq. that's what they told us about why we had to have that war. none of it was true. ten years ago when we invaded iraq, we were told it was all about 9/11, that if we didn't go invade iraq, that the next attack by the same people would be a nuclear attack. a chemical weapons talk or a nuclear attack. the smoking gun would be a mushroom cloud. and that's not true. there was relationship
romney candidacy so it would have slowed them down. but for some voters out there this just might have been a dream that was too good to be true. >> that i will faithfully execute -- >> what if president obama had faced him and him in last year's election? who would be living here? during the republican primary, rick santorum and newt gingrich just couldn't see eye to eye and they trained their sights on each other. >> at times you just sort of, you know, that worrisome moment that something is going to pop and we can't afford that in a nominee. >> i think long before rick came to congress i was busy being a rebel. those are just historic facts even if they're inconvenient for rick's campaign. >> reporter: but soon they stopped snipping at each other and started sniping at romney. before long, both men had dealt serious blows to the front-runner. santorum with the surprise squeaker in iowa followed by a gingrich win in south carolina. suddenly, mitt romney was on the ropes. a gingrich adviser went to the santorum camp. would the senator join the speaker on one ticket? no. santorum was
. mr. carlson, mitt romney could live anywhere he wants -- except the white house -- and so he chose to sell his mansion in utah and buy a mansion in liberal la jolla, california. why did he decide to settle in california? >> mitt romney -- the name rings a bell -- as someone who is from la jolla, i would say he inexplicable, to be honest with you. i would have been happier had mitt romney moved to highland park, texas, for example. there you go. or louisiana. i will say if you are interested in drinking complicated coffee and going surfing, la jolla is fantastic. >> he does not drink coffee. >> that is right. >> just froth. >> i ask you this question last year. i will ask it again because you are qualified, of all the in this room, you know more about this than any. you are personally close to the clintons. do you believe that she will run for president in the next cycle, and do you think she should? >> do i think she should? absolutely. i work backwards and say, will she be a good president? the answer is no, she would be a great president. it is interesting now that we have moved
romney's advisers said a transition from primary season to the general election campaign was almost like an etch a sketch? you can kind of shake it up and start all over again. well, enter romney's opponents giving new life to what i thought had become a forgotten children's toy. >> imagine had mitt romney been around at the time we were drafting our constitution? he'd have just shaken it and just shook it up after to rewrite it. >> given everything people have said about governor romney's flip-flops over the years, this was sort of capturing what everybody was afraid of. in a way we probably ought to thank his communications director for telling the truth. >> finally, minnesota senator al franken made transition from comedy to politics he left funny stuff behind to take on serious issues. still the two worlds of al franken merged when he rattled off a list of potentially dangerous consequences of not raising the debt ceiling back in 2011. >> no federal government employees, including counterterrorism agents, in the fbi, for example, no border agents. now, before we default, we could hav
'm told, of black voters back mitt romney. 6%, and that number seems high to me. you cannot win with number like that especially when people of color will soon be the majority in this country. also, our plans to improve communication wet voers while also cutting the number of presidential debates. why let you know what you really think. they want to move the convention earlier in the summer so they can tap into cash sooner. that's a great idea. and there is a push to close the digital media and tech gaps and all this sounds easily achievable if you listen to preebus. >> we know we have problems. we've identified them and we're implementing the solutions to fix them. to be clear, our principles are sound. we will do a better job of connecting with people, to our principles, showing how we can help every american climb the economic ladder. especially in communities we haven't been in a long time, but b what it means to be paubl. the rnc cannot and will not write off any demographic, community or region of this country. it all goes back to what our moms used to tell us. it is not j
ago. >> if you don't run chris christie, romney will be the nominee. and lose. >> and here is ann coulter this weekend, landing one squarely on the jaw of the very same guy she once wanted to elect president. >> even cpac had to cut back on his speakers this year by about 300 pounds. i'm now a single-issue voter against amnesty. so christie's off my list. >> the next national election is still 596 days away. but there's no rest for republican party still duking it out. how long before a victor is declared? republican strategist mike murphy is not optimistic. predicting we will be stuck in an age of chaos and factional warlords for a while. the battle royale will be the 2015 presidential primary season. robert, you could hear dog wiss in the background during some of those remarks at cpac. this is, i think we've seen a messy republican party over the course of last several months. but the coming, the sort of head-to-head at cpac, i thought was the strongest and starkest example of the challenges the party faces that we've seen in a long time. >> whatever you describe how the campai
romney said something similar a few days ago. let's talk about how the purpose of this war is being purposefully misremembered. we're being told now today all these reasons to feel good about the war. is it accurate to say that donald trump may have been the only republican to tell the truth what he said this was supposed to be a war for oil. >> he was accurate in part. there were a lot of reasons. those two quotes appeal compared to the things dick cheney had to sayness documentary running right now which absolutely curdled my blood. oil was a part of it, but there were many other parts. as you go through each one of the players you find each one had their own special reason for getting us into this nightmare. >> i wouldn't say i would condemn every politician who supported this, but in the case of cheney, bush, mitt romney and rush limbaugh, people who avoided military service in vietnam and then supported this war, do they get a special place in satan's party room? >> yeah, i would think so, but cognitive distance is par for the course for the republican party. it didn't surprise
to the very wealthy. it's like the romney plan on steroids. >> you would dispute that. "the wall street journal," though, congressman, wrote thing something on friday that caught my attention. the headline, conservatives warn lawmakers against tax deals. conservative activists and organizations have begun warning republican logtss if they agree to raise taxes in a broad budget deal with the president, they should expect to face challenges from the party's right wing in the next primary elections. i've tried to ask this week after week. any ratio of spending cuts to tax increases that any republican is prepared to support? >> every viewer that's watching today that's working already got a tax increase. the president took $600 billion out of this economy. he talks about a balanced plan but he never talked about cutting. >> but you extended 99% of the bush tax cuts, your own leader said that was a pretty good deal. >> he raised $600 billion worth of taxes. he took from the economy, and he never made any cuts. look, the president has a different belief than we do. he believes deficits don't
forward-looking agenda for america. he made a mitt romney with a wife that's equestrian -- let's not kid ourself. we have two robust parties. each have their own problems. we're likely to see a competitive political environment for decades to come. as for rand paul, good comment. republicans need to help resolve the issue of immigration reform, in order to get this issue behind us. i think it's interesting. mitt romney got 27% of the latino vote. in the battleground states with exit polling he got 32%. in the battleground of battlegrounds, ohio, he got 42% of latino votes. maybe that's a small sampling. nonetheless, the fact of the matter is, the more he was able to make these arguments about the economy and deficit and debt and the affordable care act -- >> but doesn't the republican party have to pass immigration reform, seem to passing it to avoid having the appearance that they're not welcoming? >> the republicans have to play a role, absolutely. my former white house deputy has taken the leadership of the effort in california to help recruit and elect hispanic republicans at the loc
colbert bush and republicans, $500,000, spending face time with top republicans, mitt romney setting up a summit for his son tag's investment fund. paul rain and chris christie may also attend. >>> and for the supreme court, a block of young people standing against same-sex marriage. one of those opponents will join me up next. >>> check your numbers. powerball winning ticket. drawn last night. are you holding a $338 million jackpot ticket? we'll tell you. you're watching msnbc. the place for politics. was on "morning joe" today on this station with dan senor who is a romney campaign adviser and we were talking about the change in politics of gun control for these red state democrats. you're a democratic leader in the congress. look at this and give me your response. >> they are under a the lot of pressure to buck their own party in pursuit of keeping the democratic majority. >> i would want senator reid to be very careful because we learned from last year's elections that a decade ago, two decades ago is no longer what some of those states in terms of the electorate has become. and i think you could galvanize your vote if you took some stands in some of those states. >> congressman? >> look, the way the mayor's doing this is the way he ought to do it. i'm a democrat. i want democrats to be in a majority. but there comes a time when politics must not supersede that which is right. the majority of us in this country believes the direction we're going in terms of universal background checks is the right thing to do. if some democrats fall or stand in the way, so be it. i want to be in the majo
's development, though, is fascinating. >> it is. i wonder if it played a role in his -- in mitt romney's campaign. i think it might have. >>> next week, the supreme court will consider a challenge to laws that outlaw same-sex marriage. >> actually, i don't think it did. i don't think the romney team wanted to win ohio. >> the woman running -- >> if they'd selected rob portman, they'd win ohio. who wants to win ohio? >> just 1 of 50. >> too constructive. >> ran this selection process, not only said it didn't play a role, but she herself has come out in support of gay marriage. >> who? >> beth myers who ran the selection process. >> but she didn't make the decisions, ran the process. >> she was influential. >> all right. >>> coming up on "morning joe." i'm just telling you -- >> what are you telling us? >> shortsightedness ran that campaign and that would have been it. >> and where can i meet them? >> he's over there with samsung. the end of power players, how the little guys are making waves on the global stage. so let's break down this play. charles? uh, charles couldn't make it. his s
and talking about a common sense caucus. and we can talk about divisions and point my finger and mitt romney said 47% of the american people. >> i rejected by the way. >> i'm sure you did and so did the american people. >> megyn: that came late. the outreach to the republicans came late in the term, but he's speaking about something more when he's talking about stoking the divisions. but speak to mark's point about undermining the financial stability and his point about the stock market a rebounding and positive economic indicators. if husband goal is to destroy the country, mark-- >> i don't know if mark wants to make that claim today when he sees the stock market react to what's happening in cyprus, and all of a sudden, the stock market and wall street is indicative of prosperous growth on main street, i would definitely take -- we have the highest labor force-- the lowest, rather, labor force participation since the 1980's, mark, you know that. the jobless rate is decreasing because people are leaving the work force. economic growth the rising tide that lifts all boats in our country .1%
ago prime minister netanyahu made it very clear he prefered governor romney back in the 2012 election. however, prime minister netanyahu made it clear though that israel, quote, remained in the present of their right to defend themselves which is clearly talking about an attack on iran which is not something that president obama wanted to see. president obama who at times has been seen a little bit soft on iran for his part tried to make it seem that the united states would always have israel's back. >> the united states of america stands with the state of israel because it is in our fundamental national security interests to stand with israel. it makes us both stronger. it makes us both more prosperous, and it make the world a better place. >> reporter: president obama has an uphill battle on this charm offensive going forward. martha, a recent poll done here in israel only 10% of israelis had a favorable or likeness toward president obama. martha: hmmm. that is a pretty rough number for him there, leland. what is he doing to sort of try to win over the people in israel during this t
